Nov 2021

October and November seem to be the most prolific months for orchids around Hobart. The species we see in October are generally still showing and the Bearded orchids (Calochilus species) have also now appeared. Sun orchids are just awaiting a suitable warm day (around 20degress or more) to open. Various bird orchids – Chiloglotis species, such as grammata, triceratops and gunnii are common.

Caladenias (spider orchids) are also in flower in many locations. Some of the more commonly-seen species include atrata (dark caladenia), gracilis (dusky caladenia), cracens (graceful caladenia), alata (fairy caladenia) and carnia (pink fingers). The more ‘spidery’ caladenias such as echidnachilla and caudata have pretty much finished now, at least in the locations I see them.
