Cryptostylis subulata (Large toongue or Duckbill orchid)

A taller orchid up to 70 mm or more, with 2 – 20 yellow-green flowers with reddish stiff protruding labellum. Commonly called the Tongue or Duckbill orchid, this striking orchid favors peaty heaths, buttongrass moorland and in dryer locations favors the edges of swamps and damp spots.

Flowers from late November to April with a peak around Christmas into January.

Not present in the Mt Wellington foothills as far as I know but there are sightings from South Arm, Bruny Island, Sandfly and many locations right around the Tasmanian Coast. Tends to form clumps and while localised, may cover quite a large area where present.

The images below were captured in the valley of the Russel River a few Km from Lonnovale in the Huon Valley.

This site has been slashed as at 11.1.22 and very few tongue orchids are showing this year.
