Corybas diemenicus (Stately Helmet Orchid)

Corybas diemenicus, the Stately Helmet Orchid is found in wet eucalyptus forest and rain forest in many locations around Tasmania. Around Hobart it can be seen in damp gullies in mossy, protected and shady but well-drained locations. Plants may grow on manfern trunks. The flowers are single on a very short stem virtually sitting on the leaf and have a characteristic fringe of ‘teeth’ on the margins.

The leaves are oval/heart shaped and bright green above and sliver-green underneath, 10 – 25 x 8 – 20 mm.

Flowering time is from July through to October. The specimens here were photographed 2 August 2020 in a damp gully in Sandy Bay.
