Caladenia alpina

Caladenia, the alpine caladenia looks very similar to C cracens, the graceful Caledania. It’s found from around 400 m above sea level to close to the highest points in the Tasmanian highlands.

Flowering in widespread highland areas around November – December, its a common find. In my experience, it does not prefer dense alpine rainforest but is at home in open alpine woodlands, grasslands and shrublands.

The example shown here was found on Kunanyi/Mt Wellington around 600 m above sea level on the side of a popular walking track in late November 2022. Extensive colonies can be seen on the Central plateau in open woodlands.
