calochilus (Bearded Orchid)
The Calochilus genus (Bearded Orchids ) are highyl distinctive with their obvious ‘beards’ and commonly seen around Tasmania in open bushland and heathey locations.
There are three species of Calochilus (Bearded Orchid) found in Tasmania – C herbacious (Pale bearded orchis) , C platychilus (Purple bearded orchid) and C paludosus (Strap beard orchid). All are widespread around Tasmania and quite common. The peak flowering period is November and December and paludosus can be seen as early as September.
