Corunastylis nudiscarpum

Corunastylis nudiscarpum (Dense Midge Orchid) is small and difficult to spot midge orchid. It’s around 60 – 90 mm high and the individual flowers, held on a small crowded spike at the top of the scape are only 3-4 mm. The locations I have seen are open Eucalyptus tenuiramis forest (Silver gum endemic to SE Tasmania) growing on poor sandy mudstone soil, usually in quite desolate locations or on sandstone-based soils.

One identifying feature is that the scape (stem) grows through the flower spike. There seem to be two flowerings on the Mt Wellington foothills, one Early to end-January or a bit later on one site in South Hobart and March/April 2020 in the vicinity of the Waterworks.
