Caladenia vulgaris

This small caladenia looks quite similar to the common Cal carnia (pink fingers) but usually flowers later, in November and December. The colours are somewhat different though colour is usually not a safe feature for identifying Tasmanian orchids. Vulgaris lacks the bright red central bands of carnia. Vulgris has more brownish or purple bands and some green on the outside of the column. The scape (stem) is usually longer than carnia.

The specimen below was a single plant in tall open woodland (stringybark forest ) with fairly open scrub on the Eastern slopes of Snug Tiers.

In my experience is this is quite a scarce orchid.
