Corunastylis pumila (Green midge orchid)

Corunastylis pumila is a very beautiful small midge orchid commonly called the Green Midge. This orchid is both quite small and its colur ansd shape blend very efectively wth surrounding hethy vegitation making it difficult to spot.

It seems to prefer dampish peaty soil down amongst over shadowing vegitation. The specimens I have seen are on heathy sedgeland in the vicinity of button grass. I suspect its more common than sightings might suggest but its poor visibilty and camoflaged appearance mean it eludes detection very well. images shown here were in the vicinity of Coles Bay late January – early February.
