Caleana Major (Large Flying Duck Orchid)
Flowering from Late Sept to March, the Large Flying Duck orchid is quite common in light Eucalypus or Casurina Forrest and heath land on sandy or gravelly soils and seems to prefer sunny warm sites. This is a common orchid around Hobart in the mid-December – Christmas period. Likely locations include Peter Murrel reserve, Waterworks and surrounding hills and the Cascade track behind the Cascade Brewery. Sometime you may also find the small duck orchid in the same locations -Paracalea minor.
