Caleana

“Flying Duck” orchids. Two species occur in Tasmania, the Large Duck and Small Duck though the small ‘duck’ previously Caleana minor is now named Paracaleana minor.

Both are widespread though the small Flying Duck is rather elusive due to its small size and coloring which matches the background vegetation very well. It also has a more restricted distribution and is more confined to the Dec-Jan period whereas the Large Duck can be found late Sept to March. Perfers sandy or gravelly soil in heathland and light eucalyptus and casuarina Forrest often amongst bracken in full sun.
