Chiloglotis reflexa (Autumn Bird Orchid)

Chiloglotis reflexa, the Autumn Bird Orchid is a late Summer and Autumn=flowering bird orchid commonly found in dry eucalypt and She-oak forest and heathland. Around Hobart it may be found on the foothills of Mt Wellington and Peter Murrel reserve but is probably quite widespread in any undisturbed patch of light bushland. It is at home on dry hillsides but seems to prefer light shade rather than totally open sites.

It is quite easy to recognise as there are unlikely to be any other Chiloglotis species flower at this time of the year and is characterised by the distictive shiny calli on the exposed labellum.

The images below were captured 25 Feb 2017 in the hills around South Hobart.
