Thelymitra ixiodes (spotted sun orchid)
A common sun orchid around Hobart in the October – November period. Locations include Peter Murrel Reserve and Waterworks Reserve. In late October 2023 the Hawthorne Reserve at Knigston had literally hundreds of ixiodes in many different shades of blue, lilac and pink-ish, possibly some hybrids. Resembles a couple of other species – T juncifolia and T sparsa.
This sun orchid opens fairly freely in contrast to some others but still requires a warm day to display the opened flower.
