THELYMITRA (SUN ORCHIDS)

Thelymitra (Sun orchids) are a large genus, almost all of which flower in spring and summer. No less than 37 species have been recorded in Tasmania. The common name refers to the habit of opening in warm, sunny weather, and searching for these can be frustrating if the weather is cool or overcast.

The flowers in most species are blue but pink, salmon and yellow flowering species also occur in Tasmania. Identification of individual species can be difficult and a good view of the column ( the fleshy organ in the centre of the flower) may be required. The column is the key floral part used in the identification of Thelymitra species.
