Pterostylis straminea (Bearded greenhood)

Pterostylis straminea is a distinctive greenhood with a hairy labellum. Previously named P plumosa it is similar to a smaller flowered greenhood – P tasmanica. The specimens photographed below were found on the Freycinet Peninsular on the Wineglass Bay lookout track (early October 2020), near Murdunna (4-11-2020) and at Lenah Valley (2.11.21). Also seen at Peter Murrell Reserve 31 Oct 2020.

Flowers between October and November in drier areas in eucalyptus forest, T-tree scrub and heath.

Staminea is very similar to the smaller Pterostylis tasmanica. Straminea has a rosette of leaves around the base and also up the stem on flowering plants whereas tasmanica only has the rosette on sterile plants and the flowers are smaller (18 – 25 mm x 6-8 mm compared to 35-45 mm x 8 – 10 mm for straminea).
