Dipodium roseum
Dipodium roseum, the Hyacinth Orchid is a large pink orchid with darker pink spots, quite prominent when flowering and growing up to 30-50 cm. Quite common in coastal heathland, open eucalypt forest in the S East, East and northern areas of Tasmania. Usually flowers from November through January.
This is one of the two genus of Tasmanian orchids with no leaves, deriving its nutrients through its roots in conjunction with soil-based fungus. The images below were captured in late January at Coles Bay and the flowering this year (2026) was significantly later by 6 – 8 weeks than seems ususal.
